Hungary Threatens to Block EU Loan to Ukraine

(MENAFN) Hungary has announced it will withhold support for a €90 billion ($106 billion) EU loan to Ukraine until oil deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline are fully restored, according to statements from Hungarian officials.

"We are blocking the €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine until oil transit to Hungary via the Druzhba pipeline resumes," Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto declared on the social media platform X.

Szijjarto accused Ukraine of using the suspension of oil transit as a form of leverage, claiming it was done “in coordination with Brussels and the Hungarian opposition” to disrupt fuel supplies and increase prices ahead of Hungary’s elections.

"By blocking oil transit to Hungary through the Druzhba pipeline, Ukraine violates the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, breaching its commitments to the European Union. We will not give in to this blackmail," he added, framing Hungary’s move as a defense of its energy interests and legal rights under the EU framework.
