Hungary slams EU remark on Venezuela, cites crisis in foreign policy

(MENAFN) Hungary’s minister for European Union affairs on Monday sharply criticized an EU statement regarding Venezuela, arguing that it exposes "the deep crisis" in the bloc’s unified foreign policy.

"Beyond expressing vague wishes, the EU has no real message or strategy for the region and is unable to define its interests in the new era of great-power politics," Janos Boka said, as shared by government spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs on social media.

Boka specifically targeted the statement released Sunday by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Venezuela, saying it "clearly exposes the deep crisis of the EU’s common foreign policy."

The EU’s announcement, supported by 26 member states but excluding Hungary, called for calm and restraint and urged adherence to international law following recent US military action that captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and transferred him to New York to face drug trafficking charges.

"The EU recalls that, under all circumstances, the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be upheld," the bloc’s statement said.

Boka criticized the EU for lacking both tools and influence, noting that it has "failed to become a meaningful actor — and no change is in sight." He described Kallas’s remarks as indicative of both weakness and a fundamental misunderstanding of shifts in international relations.

The Hungarian minister emphasized that Budapest is actively protecting its citizens in Venezuela, securing the nation’s energy interests, and closely monitoring developments on the ground.
